ADVERTISEMENTS
"The King and I," with music by Richard Rodgers, and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, is a "spectacular masterpiece."
The play is based on "Anna and the King of Siam" by Margaret Landon and is set in Bangkok in the early 1860s, where Rodgers and Hammerstein's stunning tale of learning to love and learning to change unfolds.
West and East collide when Anna, an English school teacher, is commissioned to govern the King of Siam's many children. Although Anna has many quarrels with the dictator, she falls in love with the King's children and endures her stay. The two eventually grow to understand and respect one another in this truly unique love story, which makes it one of the most exquisite stories ever told and perfect for the entire family.
The play includes remarkable musical numbers like "Getting to Know You," "Something Wonderful" and "Shall We Dance?"
The Broadway Rose's version of "The King and I" is directed by Broadway Rose artistic director Sharon Maroney with choreography by Amy Beth Frakel.
The show stars Joe Theissen as the King and Amy Jo Halliday as Anna and features the largest cast the Broadway Rose has ever put together.
There are 56 people in the play, including the King's 10 wives, 18 children and 10 dancers (of which six are from the Polaris Dance Company).
The play runs July 1 to 25, with performances starting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. matinees Sundays and some Saturdays.
The play will be performed at the Deb Fennell Auditorium at Tigard High School, 9000 S.W. Durham Road, Tigard.
Ticket prices range from $20 to $35.
