Various disabled parking signs are confusing for drivers

Washington County Sheriff's Office volunteer sets the record straight

ADVERTISEMENTS

A King City Lions Club member who volunteers for the Washington County Sheriff's Office and patrols disabled parking spaces sees confusion among drivers about different types of disabled parking permits.

One is for wheelchairs only, and the other requires a wheelchair placard; and traditional disabled parking permits are not valid in those spaces.

According to the 2007-09 Oregon Driver Manual, Oregon issues special parking permits to persons with disabilities or groups that transport persons with disabilities.

People must have a driver’s license or identification card and the signature of a medical professional to apply for a disabled-parking permit.

In addition, Oregon also issues a wheelchair-disabled parking placard or decal to persons with disabilities who use wheelchairs or similar low-powered motorized vehicles.
