Due to the growing interest in eco-friendly business, Portland Community College is planning to launch the Cascadia Regional Institute for Sustainability Education (Cascadia-RISE).
Noelle Studer, one of the project’s lead organizers, said the institute will be a consortium of colleges and businesses aimed at improving math and science skills as they relate to energy conservation, watershed care and other environmental “best practices” in the work force.
“There’s a competitive advantage for contractors and businesses who understand green building,” she said. “We’re expecting the demand to grow.”
The Cascadia-RISE center will focus on educating technicians in such fields as heating and air conditioning, drafting and design, building construction, landscape design and installation and facilities management. Some colleges and universities already offer similar ‘green’ learning programs for architects and other people seeking advanced degrees, but not individuals oriented toward blue-collar careers.
“It hasn’t trickled down into two-year degrees yet,” said Studer.
Seed money for the project was provided by the National Science Foundation, a federal agency, on July 1.
